How to Make Music on Your Computer

Previous Experience Required: None (this class is for beginners)
Concepts Taught: Music basics (notes), melodies, basic chords, consonance and dissonance, intervals, scales and keys, virtual instruments, mixing basics, volume, pan, form, exporting
In this class, students will learn how to create awesome-sounding music of their own composition using nothing but their computer.
We’ll start by learning the very basics of music composition, and then slowly add to that bit by bit until we’re composing entire pieces of music, complete with multiple virtual instruments like guitar and piano. Each class session will start with sharing our homework from the previous class, then we’ll spend a few minutes (1-5) discussing a new concept. After that, for the rest of the class, we’ll work on a small compositional exercise or project that explores and demonstrates the concept. Students will create their own mini-compositions using the software, and be able to immediately play back and hear their creations. As they go, the teacher will “make the rounds”, checking in with each student to give helpful feedback and tips, and to make sure they understand. Finally, at the end of the class session, the students will be given a homework assignment to further practice the concept.
By the end of the entire course, students will have created several of their very own pieces of music which they can play right off of their computer or Chromebook for their friends and family.

This is a well-structured class.
Cody started by teaching the kids to drag and drop in pre-created music loops. Then gradually throughout the class, they learned to replace the loops with their own custom creations. Just a really well-thought out and structured class that lets them start creating music right away while also gradually learning the skills to create the music themselves from scratch.
